Neeraj Gupta of Battelle gave a presentation
on CO₂ EOR in the Midwest at an event hosted by the U.S. Energy Administration (USEA) in Washington D.C. on July 30. Dr. Gupta covered the recent progress in the MRCSP’s large-scale CO₂ injection program in Michigan and efforts underway in the Ohio River Valley and other parts of the MRCSP region. The presentation included information about project development and design, monitoring, and use of regional infrastructure. Issues related to ensuring project safety and developing an understanding of brine disposal needs were also discussed. The overall goal of the MRCSP is to assess the viability of CO₂ capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) throughout the MRCSP region with the aim of facilitating commercial deployment of CCUS in this fossil-energy dependent region. Dr. Gupta also touched on the value of the regional geologic characterization work conducted by MRCSP for informing research on shale gas development and related produced water disposal in the region.
